80 year old Grandparents are busted with over 60 pounds of Marijuana, claim it was for Christmas Gif

An Elderly Couple were busted in Nebraska driving with over 60 pounds and what they claim was Christmas Gifts for the whole family. Authorities believe Patrick Jiron, 80, and his wife, Barbara, 83 were driving with the drugs across state lines from Northern California and were trying to get to Vermont where they live. Police found pounds of Marijuana in boxes after they pulled the Toyota Tacoma over and searched the truck for probable cause. The York County Sheriff's Department in Nebraska told The York News-Times, "They said the marijuana was for Christmas presents," . The marijuana has an estimated street value of $336,000 and is a federal case because of traveling with it across state lines.

"Any distribution of marijuana that occurs across state lines absent a federal license is a violation of federal law,". Drug trafficking penalties vary depending on the schedule of the drug being trafficked and the amount. For less than 50 kilograms of marijuana (or from one to 49 marijuana plants), the maximum penalty for the first offense is up to five years in jail and a fine of up to $250,000 for a single individual. For the second offense, the maximum penalty doubles: up to 10 years behind bars and a fine not to exceed $500,000. The DEA lists penalties for more serious crimes on its website and still have marijuana as a controlled substance.
