Hip Hop & R&B are now more popular than any other Genre including Rock & EDM music analy
Nielsen Soundscan has released their latest analytics for music streams and downloads and have found that Hip Hop is now more popular than Rock Music, Pop, EDM and any other Genre. This is the first time in History the Hip Hop has surpassed all the Genres to become number one. Hip Hop artist Cardi B just recenlty passed R&B Singer Beyonce. According to the new release of the charts, Cardi B has become the third act (and first woman) to score five of the top 10 hits on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart since the list started in 1958. Many kids of today now listen to Hip Hop and the people in their late 40's are Hip Hop influenced as well. According to a semi-annual report published by Nielsen Music, R&B and hip-hop make up 25.1% of all music consumption in the U.S., while rock claims 23%. For the first time since Nielsen started keeping tabs on American music consumption, hip-hop and R&B have overtaken rock.
Rock still leads when it comes to hard copy album sales, claiming 40% of all album sales in the country, but with the rise of the internet and being able to purchase online with one click, physical record sales are decreasing as more and more people consume their music via streaming. Many CD stores have shut down such as multiple Virgin Records, Target Music and more due to the decrease of hard copy album sales. Hip-hop – along with R&B – account for eight of the 10 most popular artists based on total consumption, which takes into account album sales, track-equivalent albums and on-demand audio/video streaming-equivalent albums. The top 10 artists were led by Drake and Kendrick Lamar respectively, while the likes of Future, The Weeknd and Eminem also made the top 10.Computer electronics are now sold more than ever and it's easy to create a playlist on your phone and play your music directly from there. Along with hard copy album sales, many people download the songs illegally once the artist puts it up on Youtube and other sites which has hurt album sales.
