California legalized Medical Marijuana at the beginning of 2018, it has been a huge success for many residents bringing in millions of dollars of revenue for the whole state, but one county wants to put a stop to it. Calaveras County board of supervisors voted 3-2 to ban marijuana which has reversed course and banned commercial marijuana farms. Hundreds of people who paid for farming permits each paid $5000 each and are now planning to sue the county. The farms are given three months to shut everything down and many will lose out on thousands of dollars and medicine that could have been used. The county, which has a population of around 45,000 people, has collected more than $7 million in taxes from marijuana growers since 2016 and has helped raise money for new Police force and numerous new staff members. This all ended after four new board members were chosen this month after winning election in November on campaign promises to ban marijuana. Many are hoping they can reverse their decision and keep their crops going, but it's unsure since the county officials have shut it down, not the state.
The 58 California counties are currently updating and establishing local policies on Cannabis retail, manufacturing and cultivation laws with frequency, on nearly a daily basis. As California counties implement new Medical Marijuana laws and the viability of Recreational Cannabis emerges, it is important to be aware of how the winds of change affect your county.Incorporated cities may have their own local policies for regulating commercial cannabis activities separate from county regulations but of right now the county has full control of what can be grown or done within their limits. The act also gives counties and cities authority to set their own regulations like the number of dispensaries, where they can operate, and how they can operate, along with the ability to outlaw them altogether. It's a move that many people are starting to fear as this could shut separate the marijuana movement and create higher fines depending on where you're at.
